Win 2×2 Tickets: XXYYXX / Giraffage / Slow Magic / Beat Culture / Blackbird Blackbird / Modig

I’m sitting on this time bomb for weeks and today I really have to drop it, otherwise it nukes me away to Brandenburg. I have 2 x 2 tickets for the Set It Off: European Tour 2013, featuring XXYYXX, Giraffage, Slow Magic, Blackbird Blackbird, Beat Culture and Modig. What the fuck? – Yes, this is real. The most talented kids in electronic music are coming to Berlin, Festsaal Kreuzberg – May 15th. This is basstacular.

Before I’m letting you know how to win these tickets, say booya to Sunik Kim aka Beat Culture and read my interview with him.

Hey Sunik, do you remember the last time when you were longer at home than one week? You must be a pretty busy man right now?

man, I actually can’t really…whenever I go home (to Hong Kong) I’m there for like 3 days and then it’s usually off to Seoul to do some shows and hang out with people, then back to school. so yeah, pretty busy…either school or music.

I can still remember the first time when you hit me with Goldenbacked Weaver, a collection of some pretty experimental stuff. It was back in July 2011, you were 16 I think and went to St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. What are you up to now besides Beat Culture?

haha feels like forever ago man. yeah I was a junior in high school and had just been messing around with making music for a couple months. I actually ended up taking that down for some reason. maybe not the best decision, I know that it helped a lot of people discover my music (and also in one of the best moments of my life Trevor Powers of Youth Lagoon stumbled on it on bandcamp and told me he really liked it). but whatever, moving on to bigger and better things now. hell I even labeled that “chillwave” on bandcamp haha. besides my music I’m heavily involved with my college’s radio station which has let me meet a lot of super chill kids who are into the same kind of stuff as me.

What is more important to you? Your career as an artist or your future as an well-educated young man with a degree in Yale?

pursuing a full time musical career is by far the most important thing for me. I don’t see myself dropping out of school ever, but once I graduate I’m definitely gonna try and do this shit full time. wish me luck!

I was in a similar situation when I went to university. I devoted three years of my life in a music festival and failed so hard on studying, until I finally gave up both. How do you manage that all?

the simple answer is that I stress out a lot and don’t really sleep that much haha.

You opened for Grimes. Any fun story to tell?

just once, this past march in Seoul! hmm it was a super good night overall, at the end of her set she was like “normally I do this encore thing where I walk off stage and you cheer and I come back out play one last song, but I don’t really wanna do that tonight so I’m just gonna play the song I was gonna play” like super wordy, she’s just the coolest. so much respect for her and her music.

Soon you’re coming to Europe, with xxyyxx, Blackbird Blackbird, Giraffe and Slow Magic. An incredible line-up. How did that happen?

yeah, that’ll be my first actual tour, up til now I’ve just been doing one-off shows. super super excited, we’re hitting tons of countries that I’ve never been to, and I’ve heard the crowds in Europe are just insane. basically we all share the same European booking agent (Guillaume of Back From Outer Space Booking), and he thought it would be a great idea to just get some of his solo producers in a van and go around the continent since we’re easy to transport and set up. so it happened!

You won’t have a lot of time to see Berlin. Are you still excited to come to the real hometown of David Hasselhoff?

I hear so much about the Berlin club scene that I’m super excited to check it out. like, I’ve heard that people will enter clubs on say Friday night and emerge from the caves two days later haha. and also electronic music just seems to be part of the culture there which is so different from any place I’ve lived in.

Beat Culture’s plans and wishes for 2013?

finally release some new music, tour, get shit rollllingggggg.
